About AverageElectricBill.com
A free, independent tool for one question people ask when the electric bill arrives: is this normal?
What it does
The bill check compares the kWh on your bill with similar homes in your state for the same time of year, and your price per kWh with the average for your state or utility. Alongside it, the site publishes average rates and bills for all 50 states and D.C. and for 1,937 utilities.
Where the numbers come from
- U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) monthly retail sales, currently through July 2026.
- EIA Form 861 annual utility data, 2025.
- EIA Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) for how much similar homes use.
- U.S. Census Bureau ZIP code areas to match a ZIP to a state.
The data refreshes automatically when EIA publishes new figures. Nothing is entered by hand. Full methodology
What it isn't
- Not affiliated with EIA, any utility, or any electricity retailer. We don't sell or recommend energy plans.
- Not an audit of your bill. Results are statistical comparisons with similar homes.
- Free to use, supported by ads.
