What is a normal electric bill?

The average U.S. household paid about $157 a month for electricity over the 12 months to July 2026, using 870 kWh at 18.0¢ per kWh, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration data. But "normal" depends on where you live, the size of your home, how many people live there and the time of year. Using 1,500 kWh in July is typical for a mid-size Texas home and above typical for the same home in California.

A bill is high for one of two reasons: you used more kWh than similar homes, or you paid more per kWh than the local average. The check above separates the two.
